Girona

Discover the surroundings

Girona, the most beautiful medieval city in northern Spain. The city is known for its monuments and historical buildings, as well as for its rich culture.

Girona has a 2000-year history, having been besieged several times by Napoleon, but it remains beautiful. The population protects its history by not renovating anything. As a result, the monuments and historical buildings are spectacular. The old town of Girona exudes a medieval atmosphere, with its narrow streets and steps of the Jewish quarter, the city wall, and the famous Girona Cathedral.

Walls of Girona

The wall, also known as the 'Walls of Girona,' is one of the most visited attractions. The wall was built in the 1st century B.C. by the Romans to defend against enemies and foreign invasions. The wall has been expanded a total of 4 times, now reaching a length of 1 kilometer. What makes the wall so special is that it has withstood two collapses: one during the French siege and another in the 19th century to expand the city. With such a rich history, the wall is even more impressive. Today, the wall is considered a cultural asset and attracts many tourists each year.

The Cathedral of Saint Mary

The famous cathedral of Girona is also frequently visited by both the population of Girona and tourists. Previously, there was a Moorish mosque at this location, but with the disappearance of the Moors, the mosque was converted into 'The Cathedral of Santa Maria' in the 11th century. The Girona cathedral is the second highest point in the city, standing out on the horizon.

The city of Girona

In addition to the monuments and historic buildings, the city itself is picturesque. The city is crossed by two rivers, the Ter and the Onyar. Due to the Onyar River, it seems like the colorful houses are hanging, funny, right?

Maybe you are not very interested in history, but you love shopping, so Girona is also the right place for you. There is not only a shopping street but also shopping centers (useful when the weather is not so good).

If you stay at Hotel Barcarola, you can also easily fly through Girona. The city has a beautiful and well-organized airport, perfect for returning home completely rested.
