Nordic Walking

Active and relaxed

Nordic Walking is walking with adapted ski poles. It is a (relatively) new activity in Spain, the Netherlands, and Belgium and very popular in Scandinavia and the United States. In Finland, where Nordic Walking originates, there are already more than a million practitioners.
Nordic Walking originated in Finland as summer training for cross-country skiers. Nordic Walkers make greater use of the shoulders and arm muscles.

The effects of Nordic Walking:

Nordic Walking is more intense than walking, but less stressful on the body than running, and it feels less exhausting than walking without a pole. Despite the greater effects on the body, the intensity of the experience is not greater. This is because the load is more distributed throughout the body. The muscles of the back, shoulders, and arms are used more intensively and are therefore trained. This results in considerable relief for the joints. And with the correct use of poles, knee and ankle joints are relieved by up to 30%.
Heart rate is 10 to 15 beats per minute higher than with normal walking, which improves the functioning of the heart and blood vessels. While practicing Nordic Walking, oxygen absorption is 20% higher and energy consumption is even 45% greater compared to normal walking. Nordic Walking is, therefore, ideal as an effective endurance sport both for better physical fitness and for losing excess weight.
